Sleepwear for Infants & Tummy Time Quilts
Volunteers Share Their Talents to Keep Babies Safe in Saginaw
Your great grandparents may have called them “Buntings”. Today’s grandmothers and expecting parent can find them under the name of “sleep sacks” and “sleep blankets”. They can range from $8.00 to $25.00 online. Many child care centers no longer allow heavy blankets near sleeping infants due to licensing rules. Parents will need a good supply of these “buntings” to get through the day.
Our Saginaw Exchange Club president and CAN Council volunteer, Nancy Corrion used her talents and investigated how to sew a bunting. She reported that she found a pattern in small to extra large sizes: McCalls #4236. Nancy happily reported that the pattern took a little over a yard and she was able to make one in two hours. The grand total was $8.00. Nancy also investigated the rules regarding infant clothing with the Consumer’s Product Safety Commission. Based on the Guidelines 009808: **The rules for flame resistance or snug fit do not apply to sleepwear for sizes nine months and under because infants that wear these sizes are insufficiently mobile to expose themselves to an open flame. What a nice alternative to the heavy quilts many families buy or make for their new grand child or new niece or nephew.
Handmade Quilts and Blankets Are Great For “TUMMY TIME”
Handmade quilts and blankets are still wonderful keepsakes and are great for TUMMY TIME. Another volunteer for CAN Council, Donna Lynn Holland wrote this little corner label to remind anyone around infants that heavy blankets are only for the floor and not to be used around SLEEPING BABIES. Project Linus Christ Lutheran Reese and Sharon Rabie and friends generously donate beautiful handmade quilts and blankets to the CAN Council. We are blessed with Loxie Lund a Forester Representative and a dedicated CAN Council volunteer, who lovingly sews labels on each blanket we receive before they are given to families
Corner Label Poem
“I’m a soft pretty blanket to admire and adore but I’m not for a crib; I’m placed on the floor
Spend time with your babies on their tummies everyday but always take them with you when you need to walk away.”
Never place heavy blankets near sleeping babies
Always place babies on their backs before you walk away
Never fall asleep with babies. If you get sleepy place them in their crib and lay them on their back

Make Life Sweet
This campaign began in April 1999 to raise awareness of child abuse during the month of April, which is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Various middle and high schools throughout Saginaw County participate by selling gourmet lollipops during the month of April each year. The campaign was so successful; we are able to run it throughout the year in area businesses. Various members of the business community have come forward to purchase a lollipop tree and sell the lollipops in their office or place of business. If your business or school is interested in participating in this fundraiser, please email or call (989) 752-7226.
Roofsit
For four days in August, the Child Abuse and Neglect Councils of Saginaw, Bay, and Genesee counties team with 102.5 WIOG and the Wilder Road- Bay City McDonald’s to increase the awareness of child abuse prevention. Radio personalities station themselves on the roof of the McDonalds and broadcast public awareness announcements along with an appeal for contributions.
